November

This November MariMenonton! has two friends visiting, each with a story to tell. First is Goethe Institute, with a program titled 20 Years After Berlin Wall Collapsed. They will screen three films that chronicle the living condition in Germany before and after the reunification: Good Bye Lenin!, Lives of Others, and Deutschlandspiel.

Another friend of ours is Jesuit Refugee Service. They have a program called Refugees Speak, which consists of four films: Disarm, Unacceptable Harm, A Well-Founded Fear, and Hope. All the films are documentaries on the struggle of refugees on lands torn by natural disaster, cluster bombs, and dodgy administration.

In tone with our friends’ stories, Kinoki will screen two animation films about people who is troubled by existential loss within them. The first film is Sita Sings the Blues, a colorful adaptation of an ancient Indian legend set to jazz music of the 20s. The second film is Waltz with Bashir, a documentary on the effort of an Israeli film director to reconstruct his memory about his involvement in a war.
