Kinoki is
A communal initiative on interactive space with audio visual as its primary medium. Kinoki was established for the first time on August 2, 2005 at Jl. Tirtodipuran no.2 Yogyakarta with its tagline “Bukan Bioskop Bukan Coffeeshop” literally translated as “not a bioscope nor a coffeeshop”. The main purpose of Kinoki ‘Bukan Bioskop Bukan Coffeshop’ is creating an alternative screening venue in Jogjakarta: alternative in its formal space, alternative in its events, and yet at the same time giving alternative discourse and spectacle to its audience. Besides encouraging and carrying out screening of various audio visual works (documentary, fiction—both long and short duration—experimental video, art video, installation video, etc), Kinoki has also been in charge of various supporting events to the development of film discourse and other audio visual media in Indonesia.
Through various community based activities, Kinoki develops wide networks with film communities in Indonesia and is actively involved in local, national as well as international events.
Other activities held by Kinoki are learning community, workshops, and IKONIK, a three-monthly cinema journal.
Since August 31, 2008 Kinoki ‘ Bukan Bioskop Bukan Coffeeshop’ reached its final term and started its new form as Kinoki ‘Pusat Data.Pemutaran.Pendidikan Populer’ (Database. Film Screening. Popular Education)
With its current form, Kinoki encourages its partners to actively make initiatives on important activities within their social circle. Kinoki provides full support on screening material/workshop, web-based publication, and suggestion needed to avoid the same flaws we’ve been done
